173. In addition to their normal police training, women constables receive instruction in community, child and special welfare work. At the end of their initial training, they are attached for five days to the Social Welfare Department to allow them to familiarize themselves with the work of the various sections of that Department.

POLICE DOG UNIT

174. The Unit comprises 36 rank and file commanded by a Senior Inspector. It has twenty Alsatians and eight Dobermanns all of which are trained as trackers and patrol dogs, and two Pointer/Alsatian crossbreeds which are trained for locating dangerous drugs.

175. The dogs are used for patrols in both urban and rural areas and during the year were responsible for 54 arrests. Tracker dogs were called for on 34 occasions.

THE POLICE BAND

176. The following engagements were undertaken by the Band during the year:

COMMUNICATIONS

177. With the completion of the new radio network under the re- organization programme, the last twelve months has been a period of consolidation. Attention has been directed to the teleprinter and tele- phone systems with a view to increasing efficiency by structural alterations and modernization of equipment. Recommendations for these changes are at the moment in the report stage.

178. 17,693 calls were made over the '999' system during the year, and of these 181 were false. 911 persons were arrested as a result of '999' calls.

179. The Police teleprinter networks passed 22,848 messages.

TRANSPORT

180. The Hong Kong Auxiliary Air Force helicopters continued to be used for aerial reconnaissance purposes and for the evacuation of injured persons from isolated or outlying areas.
