128. 314 investigations were made of applicants for the Police Force. 129. The work of the Interpol Sub-Bureau has continued to increase. During the year it has participated in 54 investigations of an international

nature.

Forensic Laboratory

130. A total of 446 victims and suspects were examined by the staff of the Police Laboratory during the year. 57 visits to scenes of crime were made. The three Forensic Pathologists attached to the laboratory attended Court on 141 occasions to give expert evidence and performed a total of 739 post-mortems. Laboratory work consisted in the main of examinations for blood and other stains. 1,386 examinations were carried out, and 1,579 blood groupings made. As the police laboratory is not staffed with experienced chemists, the majority of materials requir- ing chemical analysis were referred to the Government Chemist.

Ballistics Office

131. This office is responsible for the examination and disposal of fire-arms and explosives used in criminal cases. The Ballistics Officer also removes arms and ammunition and explosives reported to the police, and inspects and advises on the storage and use of explosives and other dangerous goods. 16 fire-arms and 119 rounds of ammunition were seized and 8 fire-arms and 605 rounds of ammunition were found. 19 shooting cases and 53 accidents involving explosives were investigat- ed. Expert evidence was given in 26 cases. The collection of arms which was started in April 1960, now totals 76 fire-arms.

Commercial Crime Office

132. A total of 424 cases were investigated by this office during the year. A total of 482 reports were received, but 58 of these reports were passed to other C.I.D. formations or the Department of Commerce and Industry for investigation. Compared with the previous year, mer- chandise marks cases increased from 8 to 21 and unsatisfactory trade transactions from 114 to 158. Frauds decreased from 85 to 37, forgeries from 32 to 19, complaints from overseas from 44 to 21 and bankruptcy cases from 4 to 1.

General Investigation Section

133. This section expanded its field of activity during the year and dealt with a total of 561 enquiries into complaints made concerning
