Fingerprint Section

155. Fingerprint forms received totalled 58,589, a slight decrease compared with the previous year. In addition, 12,687 fingerprint forms were received from various Government Departments for record check, mainly in respect of applicants for licences or prospective employees. Of the 352 sets of prints from unidentified dead bodies, 218 or 61% were identified. At the end of the year, 240,743 sets of fingerprints were on file.

Scene of Crime Section

156. Visits to scenes of crime totalled 1,177 and 99 articles were forwarded to the Bureau for examination. Identifications from prints found at scenes of crime totalled 48; prints found at scenes of crime but not identified totalled 82. At the end of the year, single prints filed under the Battley system totalled 34,860. The officer in charge of this section was attached to various police forces in the U.K. during the year, in order to study their methods.

Photographic Section

157. New microfilm processing equipment was supplied during the year. Details of work done by the section during the past two years are set out below:
