as masters of launches. At the end of the year, 14 rank and file were attending a pilotage course at the Hong Kong Technical College.
COURSES IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
84. Nineteen members of the Force, including eight local officers, attended courses in the U.K. during the year under review. Details of these courses are given in Appendix VI.
INTERNAL SECURITY TRAINING
85. All members of the Uniformed Branch undergo internal security training and exercises are held periodically in Divisions and Districts to test the efficiency of the Force in its emergency role. Two major exercises were held during the year for which the entire Force was mobilized and in which the military garrison took part.
THE POLICE TRAINING CONTINGENT
86. This unit gives specialized internal security training to personnel from Districts and Branches who are selected to undergo courses of six months duration.
Throughout these courses, the emphasis is on riot drill training and physical fitness and the Contingent therefore provides a well trained reserve unit for special duties or for use in the event of an internal disturbance. It is intended that all members of the Force of suitable age will eventually undergo this specialized training.
ENGLISH
87. English classes for the rank and file continued to be conducted under the auspices of the Director of Education and this year 302 candidates passed the most advanced, or Stage V examination, and qualified for a special bonus of $100. Roughly 16% of the rank and file now have this qualification.

88. During the year 406,795 reports were dealt with by police, an increase of 34,512 over the previous year. A breakdown of these reports and a comparison with previous years are given overleaf:
