78. Gazetted Officers are required to pass examinations including law, Police operational problems and administration during their first five years' resident service after appointment. Study for these profes- sional examinations is undertaken in the officer's own time.

INSPECTORATE POST RECRUIT TRAINING

79. A system of post recruit training for probationary sub-inspectors operates in the Force. On leaving the Training School each probationary sub-inspector is now subject to a programme which has been arranged to cover his next six months of service, and includes:

(a) a two weeks attachment to the Headquarters of the Division to

which he is posted;

(b) the performance of general police duties for a period of three months under the supervision of older and more experienced colleagues;

(c) attachments to specialist branches for short periods; and (d) close supervision for the whole of the six months period during which he is frequently interviewed and reported on by his senior officers.

After this the officer is gradually given more responsible duties, but training is continued for the remaining two years of his probationary period by means of regular lectures. During this two year period a probationary sub-inspector has to attend a two weeks intermediate re- fresher course at the end of the first year and final refresher course at the end of two years.

80. The first of these intermediate refresher courses was held during the year and further intermediate and final refresher courses will follow.

TRAINING OF AUXILIARY POLICE

81. The Police Training School also provides facilities for training the Auxiliary Police and during the year 1,512 members of the Auxiliary Police attended the annual training camps arranged at the School.

TECHNICAL COURSES

82. 243 members of the Force completed courses of instruction at the Police Driving School and of these, 234 qualified.

83. During the year, 3 inspectors qualified as marine navigators, 10 members of the rank and file obtained pilotage certificates and 5 inspectorate and 16 rank and file were granted certificates of competency
