(ii) Four Criminal Investigation courses were held during the year
and 112 members of the C.I.D. rank and file attended. (iii) A two weeks' traffic accident investigation course for members. of the rank and file was introduced during the year and 141 officers attended these courses. This course is designed to improve the standard of traffic accident investigation and reporting. (iv) Rank and file cadet courses are held at Police Training School each year. This course which was introduced in 1954 gives out- standing members of the rank and file six months intensive training on police subjects at inspectorate level to enable them to qualify for accelerated promotion. Of the 101 rank and file who have attended this course, 69 have been promoted to sub- inspector whilst a further 26 have gained accelerated promotion in the ranks. The sixth of these courses was held during the year and twenty members of the rank and file attended.
SPECIAL COURSES
74. Two instructors courses attended by 26 Inspectors and 18 staff sergeants were held this year. These courses are designed to ensure uniformity in the standard of instruction throughout the Force and to improve the knowledge and confidence of the Inspectors and N.C.O.s who will be required to carry out instructional duties.
75. Twenty four gazetted officers and inspectors attended the second extra-mural studies course on the social and psychological background of crime during the year. This course, which was organized by the University of Hong Kong, proved to be both interesting and thought provoking.
76. A special course of instruction for court inspectors was intro- duced during the year, to cover all aspects of Court Procedure and prosecution and consisted of a series of lectures and practical demon- strations and exercises.
PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATIONS
77. Sub-Inspectors are normally required to pass examinations at an appropriate level in law, police duties and drill before being con- firmed in their appointments. They are later required to pass similar examinations at a higher level in order to qualify for advancement to inspector. Overseas officers are also required to pass qualifying exam- inations in Cantonese.
