61. Eighty five members of the Force were commended by the Commissioner of Police.
62. Rewards granted to members of the Public for special services totalled $6,450 and to members of the Force, $33,653. There were 4,729 men drawing Good Conduct allowance at the end of the year.
PART III
RECRUITING AND TRAINING
THE POLICE TRAINING SCHOOL
63. The Hong Kong Police Training School is located at Wong Chuk Hang, Aberdeen, approximately nine miles from the centre of the city of Victoria. The school area covers about fifty acres of land and offers good scope for development. The buildings are largely converted warehouses and have a rather austere and drab appearance. They have however served a useful purpose and will continue to do so until modern buildings are erected in the near future.
64. The administrative and teaching staff consists of a Comman- dant, Senior Superintendent, a Deputy Commandant, Superintendent, a Training Officer, a Chief Inspector, fifteen Inspectors and twenty four Non-Commissioned Officers.
STANDARDS FOR ENLISTMENT
65. All persons joining the Force are required to be of sound physique with normal eyesight without glasses.
66. Overseas Probationary Sub-Inspectors, who are recruited in the United Kingdom by the Crown Agents, are required to be single, between the ages of twenty and twenty seven years, not less than five feet eight inches in height and of good education.
67. Local Probationary Sub-Inspectors are recruited locally on selection by a Board consisting of the Deputy Commissioner and the Commandant, Police Training School. They are required to be between the ages of twenty and twenty five years, not less than five feet six inches in height and in possession of the Hong Kong School Certificate issued by the Education Department.
68. Recruit constables are selected by the Commandant, Police Training School from local applicants between eighteen and twenty five years of age. They are required to be not less than five feet five inches in height and to be able to read and write Chinese fluently.
