MARINE POLICE

33. The Marine Police are responsible for policing the Colony's 700 square miles of territorial waters, and 235 off-shore islands. Marine Police patrols also visit those more remote areas of the mainland which are more easily reached by sea.

CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION DEPARTMENT

34. Under the direction of an Assistant Commissioner, the C.I.D. is responsible for the investigation of crime and shares in the respon- sibility for its prevention. Part IV of this Report gives a detailed description of its organization.

THE SPECIAL BRANCH

35. This Branch is responsible for the prevention and detection of subversive activities within the Colony and for supplying the intelligence necessary for the maintenance of internal security.

36. The Director of the Special Branch is an Assistant Commis- sioner, with a Senior Superintendent as Deputy Director. The Branch is divided into Sections, each controlled by a Gazetted Officer or Chief Inspector.

THE TRAFFIC BRANCH

37. The Traffic Branch is commanded by a Senior Superintendent. Traffic Headquarters is responsible for traffic planning, public transport, road safety measures and education, vehicle licensing, driving tests and the issue of driving licences and other miscellaneous permits relating to traffic control. Vehicle registration and the collection of all revenues in relation to licensing is the responsibility of the Finance Section of Police Headquarters.

38. For operational purposes, the Branch is divided into two districts, one covering Hong Kong Island and the other embracing Kowloon and the New Territories. These district units are responsible for traffic control and accident investigation.

THE COMMUNICATIONS AND TRANSPORT BRANCH

39. This Branch is responsible for all communications maintained within the Force and for the training of W/T and R/T operators. The Transport section is responsible for all Police motor vehicles and for the training of Police drivers.
