169. The radio control room received 13,331 calls, including 7,815 '999' calls, which necessitated action. These resulted in the arrest of 1,259 persons for various offences. There were seventy two calls result- ing from technical faults in burglar alarms and eighty seven malicious false reports. The originators of a number of these reports were traced and prosecuted.
Water Transport
170. The Marine Division fleet consists of:
2 Empire steam tugs
9 seventy-foot seagoing motor launches
1 forty-foot diesel launch.
2 diesel motor boats
1 shallow draft launch
12 small diesel tugs

WELFARE AND RECREATION
GENERAL
171. During the year a new post of Social Services Officer was created. This officer works in close conjunction with the Staff Officer, Welfare. Commanders at all levels continued to devote a portion of their time to welfare matters and worked closely with the staff of the Welfare Office.
172. The Welfare Fund, established under the provisions of the Police Force Ordinance, continued to provide interest free loans to relieve personnel who, through no fault of their own, had got into temporary difficulties. It is worthy of note that this privilege is seldom abused, very few requests are frivolous with the result that only a small percentage are rejected. Loans are also requested to meet expenses connected with marriages, confinements, house repairs, schooling, funerals and to purchase winter clothing. Assistance has also been given to personnel whose homes have been damaged or destroyed by fire.
173. This Fund also provides such benefits as special amenities for men in hospital or convalescent; special equipment for crippled children, social entertainment, outings for men and their families, scholarships
