secured good order in the country-side with the help and co-operation of the village elders and village guards.

56. The Force is responsible through its Marine Division for policing the seven hundred square miles of territorial waters, nearly two hundred islands large and small and the Port of Victoria. The complexities of the task of maintaining watch and ward are increased by the thousands of native craft which ply to and from the Colony and anchor within its waters.

57. In providing contact between the outlying islands and the mainland the police launches perform many social services which include postal deliveries, cinema shows, the transportation of St. John Ambulance Brigade penetration patrols and the conveyance of sick and injured persons to hospital.

Special sections of the Uniformed Branch included:

EMERGENCY UNITS

58.

There is an Emergency Unit attached to the headquarters of each of the three Districts which provides an immediately available reserve of manpower. The present total strength is 404.

59. These Units also provide the crews for radio patrol cars and perform many and varied escort duties as circumstances require. The Hong Kong Island Unit provided men for duty at race meetings and major football matches, thereby reducing the burden on divisional establishments.

THE POLICE TRAINING CONTINGENT

60. The formation of this unit was commenced during the year with the dual object of training personnel of all ranks for internal security duties, and at the same time providing reserve units readily available at short notice. By 31st March, 1958 the unit, which is housed in a camp in the New Territories, had reached a strength of one Company. Its approved establishment is 345 all ranks.

THE WOMEN POLICE

61. In addition to routine duties at stations throughout the urban area of the Colony, Women Police are permanently employed in the Magistrates' Courts, Special Branch and Criminal Investigation Depart- ment. They also regularly accompany the St. John Ambulance penetra- tion patrols which operate in the more remote parts of the Colony.
