subjects at the inspectorate level. During the year thirty three members of the Force were selected for the course, nine being subsequently promoted to Sub-Inspector and four given accelerated promotion as N.C.O.S. Competition for selection for these courses is now very keen and all those who obtain a place respond by working to the limits of their powers. At the end of this year there were twenty Rank and File Cadets in the school.

45. A total of 105 detective officers, including eight women, attended courses on detective work and procedure during the year. Courses on criminal investigation, crime recording and the preparation of reports and files were provided for selected students with a good knowledge of English. These students were subsequently appointed as junior investigators, whose main duties are the complete investigation of minor criminal offences which simultaneously further advances their own training and relieves more senior officers for other work. A total of fourteen have so far been trained and six were still under training at the end of the year.

46. The Force continued to instruct its own drivers during the year. A total of 215 men underwent instruction at the Police Driving School, of these 214 qualified and one failed.

47. Five inspectorate officers and six members of the Rank and File were granted Navigation Certificates during the year. Certificates of competency as Masters of launches were granted to two inspectorate officers and twenty five members of the Rank and File. A further twenty eight members of the Rank and File were studying to qualify as coxswains at the end of the year. The Force is indebted to the members of the Marine Department and the staff of the Technical School for their most valuable assistance in connexion with these

courses.

48. Training courses in the United Kingdom were attended by nine Gazetted Officers and eleven inspectorate officers during the year. The details are set out in Appendix VI.

49. The training of inspectorate and Rank and File in radio procedure and communications continued throughout the year by way of initial courses for officers not previously instructed, and refresher courses for others.

50. Training in law and police duties is regularly carried on in all Divisions of the Force. Musketry courses were fired in accordance with approved schedules and, despite the limited time available for training,
