82. Table XIV shows graphically the post-war trends of the numbers of companies incorporated and the totals of their nominal capitals, and the trends since 1959-60 of the numbers of land invest- ment and import/export companies.

Table XV gives an analysis according to the nature of business of the 374 companies dissolved or removed from the register during the year and also of the aggregate total of 1,220 for the five years ended 31st March 1973. The main casualties were as usual in import and export companies, which lost 119, while land investment companies lost 44, engineering etc. companies 18, shipping and garment manufacturers 16 each, financiers and capitalists and wig manufacturers 15 each, and restaurants and night clubs 14.

84. With 5,389 new companies, one restoration and 374 dissolu- tions, there was a net increase of 5,016 in the number of companies on the register, which on 31st March 1973 stood at 27,530, comprising 1,764 public companies (1,310 being companies limited by guarantee), and 25,766 private companies.

85. The number of documents received for filing and the number of inspections of files by the public rose to the new record figures of 72,771 and 70,066 respectively. These figures represent increases of about 19.9% and 20.1% over the corresponding figures for 1971-72.

86. Although under no statutory obligation to do so, the Companies Registry sends reminders in respect of failures to file Annual Returns and other documents within the prescribed periods, and every year publishes advertisements calling attention to the statutory requirements. On the incorporation of every new company the Companies Registry supplies it with a pamphlet entitled 'Notes on certain provisions of the Companies Ordinance with special reference to documents which have
