116. Part I of Table XXI gives statistics of applications, regis- trations, renewals, cancellations, removals and restorations, for the ten years 1962-63 to 1971-72, and Part II gives statistics of miscel- laneous other work done during the year with the corresponding figures for the previous year. It will be seen from Part I of this Table that there have been decreases in the number of renewals and removals, the former having dropped from 1,292 to 1,260 and the latter from 499 to 409.

Fees

117. Mainly as a result of the increases in the number of marks registered, registration of assignments of marks and the number of requests for extensions of time in trade mark proceedings, the fees collected during the year rose by $15,791 over the 1970-71 figure to the new record total of $562,218. Particulars of fees collected are given in Table XXII.

PATENTS REGISTRY

Patents Registrable

118. There is no original registration of patents in Hong Kong, but patents granted in the United Kingdom may be registered under the Registration of United Kingdom Patents Ordinance. This provides that the grantee of a patent in the United Kingdom, or any person deriving his right from the grantee may, within five years from the date of issue of the patent, apply to have it registered here, and that such registration shall confer the same rights as though the patent had been issued in the United Kingdom with an extension to Hong Kong. Applications must be accompanied by a certified copy of the United Kingdom specification and a certificate from the Comptroller General of the United Kingdom Patent Office giving full particulars of the issue of the patent.

119. The number of patents registered during the year rose by 118 from last year's total to 509. The numbers registered during the past six years have been as follows:
