Applications and Registrations
109. There was a slight decrease in the number of applications during the year, which at 2,596 was 53 less than the 2,649 received in 1970-71. Of these applications, 2,554 were for registration in Part A of the Register, and 42 for registration in Part B. There was also a decrease of 249 to 1,860 in the number of applications accepted. There was, however, an increase of 70 to 1,840 in the number of marks registered, these comprising 1,765 registrations in Part A and 75 in Part B.
110. Table XIX gives the number of marks registered in each of the 34 scheduled classes, and Table XX shows the countries of origin of the applications for the 1,840 marks registered. In each case the previous year's figures are included for comparison. The numbers of marks registered during the year exceeded the 1970-71 figures in more than half of the 34 scheduled classes. The most notable increases took place in Classes 9 (scientific instruments, etc.) up 48 to 175, 14 (precious metals and their alloys, horological instuments, etc.) up 24 to 78, 30 (coffee, tea, cocoa, etc.) up 20 to 83, and 33 (wines, spirits and liqueurs) up 20 to 40. The seven countries from which most applications were received were the United States of America (482), Hong Kong (447), Japan (242), the United Kingdom (180), West Germany (104), Switzerland (80) and France (47). This is the same order as the preceding year.
111. 409 marks were removed from the Register for non-payment of the registration renewal fee, six were cancelled at the request of the registered proprietors, and 26 removed marks were restored to the Register. The total number of marks on the Register on 31st March 1972 was therefore 26,712 comprising 2,256 re-registered pre- war marks and 24,456 new marks.
