161. According to the 1961 Census the population of the Colony on 7th March 1961 was 3,133,131 including 3,483 persons classified as transients. Since then the estimated population has risen as follows:

The number of registered births in 1968 exceeded that of the registered deaths by 63,673, but the number of known births exceeded that of known deaths by 64,390, the latter figure thus representing the natural increase in population.
