183. Table II lists the holders, both substantive and acting, of the principal appointments in the Department during the year. Mr. W. HUME acted as Registrar General during Mr. THOMSON's absence on vacation leave from 4th May to 8th October 1966, Mr. I. A. REID acting as Assistant Registrar General in charge of the Land Office in Mr. HUME's place. Messrs. N. M. GLEESON and D. M. NICOLL were appointed Senior Legal Assistants with effect from 1st April 1965 and 10th May 1966 respectively.

184. For a welcome change, recruitment of Legal Assistants took a definite turn for the better, four new Legal Assistants, Messrs. J. P. ANDERSON, a Scottish Solicitor, J. L. G. MCLEAN, a New Zealand Barrister and Solicitor, and A. R. HEARDER and F. G. KEIL, Australian Barristers and Solicitors, being recruited as Legal Assistants, and three local Solicitors, Messrs. Ip Tai-lui, Vicking FUNG Chi-keung and SHUM Lap-shing (who became a full Legal Assistant on 2nd January 1967) being recruited as Legal Assistants (Pupils). These accessions were, however, almost balanced by resignations, Mr. P. MURPHY, Mr. J. GILMARTIN, Miss H. V. M. COGAN, Mrs. S. J. MONKMAN and Mr. Ip Tai-lui all leaving the Department. This left the Department four short of its establishment of fourteen Legal Assistants and one Legal Assistant (Pupil) with a further vacancy for a Legal Assistant due to occur on the expiry of Mr. MURPHY's leave.
