187. The Department has also a Microfilm Unit to carry out a large microfilming programme which originally included the microfilm- ing of all the memorials, totalling 525,669, registered in the Land Office since 1844. The project was first launched in 1963 with the ordering of a full range of equipment and material based on the recommendations of the Organizational Surveys Unit. Major items of equipment delivered in April 1964 included two Microfile Cameras Model AH5, eight Recordak Archival Readers, and three Recordak Viewprint Processors Model 35, one of which was damaged beyond repair during shipment. Owing to difficulties encountered in recruiting photographers the Unit, which is at present staffed by five photographers, did not come into full operation until 1st October 1965. Experiments were made earlier in the year with the equipment to determine the most suitable methods of using it. A total number of 83,500 memorials registered in the Land Office was microfilmed, but in view of the recurrent expenditure involved in the staff and material required for the project, which far exceeded the rental at the present rate of additional space required for the storage of memorials in the Land Office, it was decided by the end of the year to abandon the project so far as it concerned the microfilming of memorials. The control of the Unit was then transferred to the Com- mercial and Personal Division of the Department, and work commenced on microfilming the records of the Births and Deaths and Trade Marks Registries and also records relating to the liquidation of The Canton Trust and Commercial Bank, Limited.
