Births and Deaths
170. The Births and Deaths Registration (Amendment) Ordinance 1965 made a number of amendments to the principal Ordinance. The most important was the extension of the period within which births must be registered from fourteen to forty-two days, which is the period allowed in Britain. The existing section 21 was replaced by a new section clarifying the duties and powers of the Registrar of Births and Deaths with respect to the investigation of the cause of death of any person not attended during his last illness by a registered medical practitioner, and of the correctness of any certificate of the cause of death. The other amendments included increases in the fees payable under the principal Ordinance, some of which were the same as those originally fixed in 1872. Under Proclamation No. 3 of 1965 the amending Ordinance was to come into operation on 1st April 1965.
171. The Births Registration (Special Registers) (Amendment of Fifth Schedule) Regulations 1965 increased the fees payable under the Births Registration (Special Registers) Ordinance, and the Deaths Regis- tration (Special Registers) (Amendment of Fourth Schedule) Regulations 1965 increased the fees payable under the Deaths Registration (Special Registers) Ordinance.
172. The Births and Deaths Registration (Description of Causes of Death) Regulation 1965 provided that for the purposes of paragraph (d) of section 20 of the principal Ordinance, causes of death shall be described in accordance with the Detailed List of Three-digit Categories set out in the Manual of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases, Injuries and Causes of Death, published by the World Health Organization.
