150. In the urban areas additional registration facilities were provided by the opening of a new combined Births and Marriage Registry on 1st May 1963 in the third floor of the Kwun Tong District Branch Offices at Kwun Tong, and of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital District Births and Deaths Registry on 1st February 1964 in accommodation on the ground floor of the Hospital.

151. In the New Territories a new combined Births and Marriage Registry was opened on 12th July 1963 on the ground floor of Ting Kok Building, Ting Kok Road, Tai Po. The new Registry serves as a static centre for registration of births for Tai Po and Sai Kung (North) areas, but the District Registrar continues to call at the Rural Committee Offices in Sha Tin, Fan Ling, Sheung Shui, Ta Kwu Ling and Sha Tau Kok. On the opening day the Acting Registrar General, to mark the occasion, held a tea-party at the Registry for members of the Rural Committee. Lau Fau Shan Police Station commenced registering deaths on 1st November 1963; prior to its opening, deaths in this area were registered at Ping Shan Police Station.

Population

152. According to the 1961 Census the population of the Colony on 7th March 1961 was 3,133,131 including 3,483 persons classified as transients. Since then the estimated population has risen as follows:

Mid-year 1961 End year 1961 Mid-year 1962 End year 1962 Mid-year 1963 End year 1963

3,226,400

3,409,700

3,526,500

3,642,500

Since the natural increase in the population in 1963, being the number by which the registered births exceeded the registered deaths in that year, was 95,515, it would seem that the number of immigrants, legal and illegal, in 1963 is estimated at about 20,000.
