Belilios Stars for such acts of bravery. These are of two kinds: the bronze eight-pointed Star awarded for bravery at sea, and the five- pointed silver Star for bravery on land. The Official Trustee now administers the trust and makes the awards after submission to the Governor for his approval. A monetary award may also be made either in conjunction with the award of a Star or where no Star is awarded. 146. Two awards of the bronze Star were made during the year, each with a $100 monetary award. Both arose out of typhoon ‘Wanda', which ravaged the Colony on 1st September 1962. The first was awarded to Assistant Revenue Officer No. 804 CHAN Sai, who jumped into the sea at Tai Po harbour when the typhoon was at its height and rescued a woman and two children from a capsized sampan. The second Star was awarded to Deck Storekeeper (Cassab) LIU Wa-ming of the S.S. 'Tung Feng' which dragged its anchors during the typhoon and piled up on the rocks off Little Green Island. The ship being in a helpless condition, the Master decided to land his crew on the island, and LIU, volunteering to get a lifeline to shore, at great risk to himself swam to the shore where clambering up the slippery rocks he made fast a line by means of which the other 43 members of the crew were able to pull themselves to safety.

147. Unfortunately, owing to the loss of the Official Trustee's pre- war records a full list of Stars awarded before the war is not available, but it appears that many awards were made for acts of bravery in previous typhoons. For instance, the Daily Press of 18th January 1907 records the award of a Star to one TE Pat-mui of Aberdeen, the first woman ever to receive one. The press report, referring to the great typhoon of 18th September 1906 reads:

'TE Pat-mui, married woman of Aberdeen, who was specially mentioned by Inspector DYMOND for brave and devoted conduct. She worked hard and courageously throughout the storm at rescuing people, while men looked on and laughed. Awarded a Bronze medal and $10'.
