who if satisfied gives the required consent to post-registration. Un- fortunately, the teams have been unable to deal with as many cases as was anticipated owing to the failure of many applicants to keep appointments booked for them.
75. A fee of $10 is payable for post-registration more than a year after the date of birth, and stamp duty of $3 is payable on each statutory declaration. A total of $31,792 was collected in stamp duty' by the three teams on behalf of the Collector of Stamp Revenue.
76. During the year 4,602 births were post-registered more than one year after the date of birth. Of these 3,415 were in respect of births in the New Territories, and 1,187 in respect of births in the urban areas where the procedure is carried out at the General Register Office and the Kowloon Births and Deaths Registry at Farm Road.
Re-registration of Births and Deaths
77. The Births Registration (Special Registers) Ordinance (Cap. 175), and the Deaths Registration (Special Registers) Ordinance (Cap. 176), provide for the re-registration of births and deaths recorded in registers destroyed or lost during the Japanese occupation. 255 births and one death were re-registered during the year. Altogether 4,678 births and 64 deaths have now been re-registered under these two Ordinances.
Prosecutions
78. As a result of information given to the Police by the Registry ten prosecutions were undertaken mostly in respect of false declarations made in relation to births. Six of the accused were convicted, and fines up to $200 were imposed with alternative sentences of imprison- ment of up to two months.
Adoptions
79. An Adopted Children Register is maintained at the General Register Office under the Adoption Ordinance, 1956. During the year 143 adoptions were registered, bringing to 375 the total number of adoptions registered since the first entry was made on 22nd July, 1957. Table XX shows the relationship of adopters to children adopted under the Adoption Ordinance during 1957 to 1960, distinguishing sex and age.
