Searches and Inspections of the Register

Where the answer is favourable, a search of this kind is usually followed by an application for registration. 1,041 inspections and searches were made by members of the public.

Applications and Registrations

44. There was a slight falling off in the number of applications received as compared with 1959-60, the total being 105 lower at 1,677. Of these 1,668 applications were for registration in Part A of the Register and 9 for registration in Part B. There were, owing to more rejections, much greater falls in the numbers of applications accepted and marks registered, the former falling by 268 (19%) to 1,138 and the latter by 335 (24%) to 1,056, of which 1,043 were registered in Part A and 13 in Part B.

Class 5 (Pharmaceuticals, etc.) has ousted Class 25 (Clothing) from top place with 246 registrations against 174 (last year there were 250 in Class 5 and 308 in Class 25). The seven countries from which most applications were received, namely Hong Kong, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, Japan, Germany, Switzerland and China, are the same and in the same order as last year.

46. Forty seven marks were removed from the Register for non- payment of the registration renewal fee, and four were cancelled at the request of the registered proprietors.
