were any marks on the Register which resembled marks submitted with such requests. Searches of this kind are usually preliminary to applica- tions for registration. 1,001 inspections were made by the public.
Applications and Registrations.
41. 1,765 applications were received for the registration of Trade Marks in Part A of the Register, and seventeen for registration in Part B-a total of 1,782, and 1,406 applications (including many made in previous years) were accepted. 1,391 marks were registered including forty-three in Part B, and four Defensive Trade Marks. Of these 1,391 marks, one had been applied for prior to 1st January, 1955, the date the 1954 Ordinance came into force, and was therefore registered according to the old classification. The remaining 1,390 were registered according to the new classification, and Table XII shows the numbers registered in each of the new classes. Table XIII shows the countries of origin of the applications for the 1,391 marks.
42. Forty six marks were removed from the Register for non- payment of the registration renewal fee, and five were cancelled at the request of the registered proprietors.
43. The total number of marks on the Register on 31st March, 1960, was 16,624, consisting of 3,161 re-registered pre-war marks and 13,463 new marks.
Oppositions to Registration
44. Twenty two notices of opposition to applications for registration were received. Seven oppositions were withdrawn, four opposed applica- tions were abandoned, and the remaining eleven cases were pending at the end of the year. Two oppositions which were pending at the end of last year went to hearings before the Registrar.
Miscellaneous
45. 308 marks were registered as Associated Trade Marks; 118 registrations renewed; 185 changes made in the names and addresses of registered proprietors; and 235 persons entered as subsequent proprietors of marks by assignment or transmission, 220 with goodwill, fifteen without. 125 applications for registration of Registered Users were received; 102 Registered Users were registered, and the remaining 23 cases were pending at the end of the year. Six registrations of Registered Users were cancelled.
