submitted with such requests. Such searches are usually pre- liminary to applications for registration. In addition, 1,056 inspections of the Register were made by the public.

Applications and Registrations

42. There were 1,498 applications for the registration of Trade Marks in Part A of the Register and 19 applications for registration in Part B-a total of 1,517, and of these 951 applications were accepted. 929 marks were registered includ- ing six in Part B. 233 of these were in respect of applications received prior to 1st January, 1955, the date the new Trade Marks Ordinance came into force, and were therefore registered according to the classes prescribed under the former Ordinance; the remaining 696 were registered according to the new classi- fication, and Table XII shows the numbers registered in each of the new classes. The countries of origin of the applications for all 929 marks are shown in Table XIII.

43. 113 marks which were on the lost pre-war Register were registered in the new Register under the Trade Marks Register (Reconstruction) Ordinance (Cap. 262).

44. 6 marks were removed from the Register for non- payment of the registration renewal fee, and 4 at the request of the registered proprietors.

45. The total number of marks on the Register on 31st March, 1956, was 11,992.

Oppositions to Registration

46. In 18 cases, notices of opposition to applications for registration were received, one of which went to a hearing before the Registrar.

Miscellaneous

47. 286 marks were registered as Associated Trade Marks. 255 registrations were renewed. 363 changes were made in the names and addresses of registered proprietors. 134 persons were entered in the Register as subsequent proprietors of marks
