PART I
INTRODUCTORY
1. The Registrar General's Department, situated in the Supreme Court Building, was established on 1st April, 1949, by the Registrar General (Establishment) Ordinance (Cap. 100), which was enacted for the purpose of combining in the Registrar General the functions of the Land Officer, the Registrar of Companies, the Registrar of Trade Marks, the Registrar of Patents, the Registrar of Marriages, the Official Receiver in Bankruptcy, and the Official Trustee. To these functions, Ordinance No. 32 of 1953 added those of the Official Solicitor in Lunacy. The Registrar General as established by Cap. 100 is a different appointment entirely from the post which was until 1913 known as Registrar General, and is now known as Secretary of Chinese Affairs.
2. The Registrar General is assisted in his duties by a Deputy Registrar General, a Legal Assistant, and six Assistant Registrars who, subject to the instructions of the Governor and of the Registrar General, may exercise all the powers, privileges and discretions vested in the Registrar General. In addition there is a Deputy Registrar of Marriages and a staff of 46 other officers.
