COTTAGE AND LICENSED AREA SECTION
98. In cottage areas, the section maintains government-owned cot- tages and departmental quarters, latrines, offices and stores. Its chief commitment, however, is the maintenance of paths, steps, surface water drains, nullahs and stream courses, terraces, and hill slopes, all of which are liable to damage during typhoons and heavy rainfall. It is responsible for designing and carrying out minor public works to im- prove the amenities of cottage areas. Among the works executed during the year were the provision of sitting areas and installation of lamp posts in Rennie's Mill Village; the improvement of paths, steps, surface channels, rubble walling, fencings, bridge nullahs and hill-slopes in various cottage areas. Expenditure on all works (including rainstorm damage repairs) in cottage areas amounted to $732,857.85.
99. A number of voluntary agencies rebuilt or converted their own buildings in cottage areas; the section is responsible for examining and approving the original building plans and any subsequent alterations
100. This section is responsible for the preparation of the general layout plans for licensed areas and supervision of the works, which include the construction of paths, steps, drainage, latrine/bath platforms and chain link fencing. It is also responsible for the repair of rainstorm damage and the usual maintenance of licensed areas. Expenditure on works in licensed areas during the year amounted to $292,775.02.
101. The section prepares quantities of material which are required for minor improvement works in squatter areas. The materials are generally supplied to the squatters by the Government and the actual works are undertaken by the squatters themselves. In some cases, how- ever, where the work involved is beyond the technical capacity of the residents, the section carries it out.
102. The clearance and resettlement of squatters to make way for permanent development sometimes involves the clearance of patches of cultivation and the planning section is responsible for preparing accurate topographical surveys for ex-gratia crop compensation and disturbance allowance.
