built in and refuse chutes are provided. The stand- ard size of room is 129 square feet housing 4-5 persons at a rent of $28.50. There are 142 Mark III blocks.
(d) Mark IV 16-storey with lifts, built from 1965-69. Each room has its own balcony, private lavatory and water-tap. Standard room is 129 square feet housing 4-5 per- sons at a rent of $32. There are 65 Mark IV blocks.

(e) Mark V
The table at Appendix 4 shows the distribution of population by estates and types of block. It can be seen that approximately half the resettlement population live in the old Mark I and II type, and half in the improved designs from Mark III onward.
40. In November 1970, the first Mark VI block was completed and handed over. This is similar to Mark V, in that it is still 16-storeys and built on an 11 feet structural grid, but the rooms are longer so as to permit the allocation of space at 35 square feet per adult instead of the old standard of 24 square feet. The standard room is 140 square feet for 4 persons at a rent of $38. 25 Mark VI blocks are under construction in five estates.
41. In September 1970, the the Governor in Council approved a recommendation made in the 1969 Housing Board Report that for future resettlement estates the standard and finish should be the same as for Government Low Cost Housing. This decision is now being implemented in that 40 blocks in 4 new estates are being constructed to a Mark VII design. This is in fact the standard 20 storey Low Cost Housing block, with a structural room grid of 14 feet. This provides rooms at 35 square feet per adult, but of a more useful shape than those in the 11 feet Mark VI.
42. Thought continued to be given to measures to improve the Mark I and II accommodation. The programme to replace haphazard tenants' outside wiring by proper cables in conduits continued; and 14,605 units in 3 estates were completed during the year, with the monthly rent being increased by $1 to cover this improvement.
