carried out a considerable phased programme of works as well as carrying out repairs in estates caused by rainstorm damage amounting to some $950,000.

118. The division prepares plans and estimates and supervises the construction by the maintenance contractor of alterations, minor improvements and new works within estates for other government departments. Schools and welfare organizations which are allocated accommodation and tenants of shops in estates invariably have to carry out alterations to, and decoration of, their premises before occupation. The estates section of Works Division approves and supervises these alterations and also alterations to domestic rooms.

119. The factory section carried out 55 field inspections of machinery in squatter factories under consideration for resettlement. It advises on floor loading and installation requirements when factories are resettled, and supervises installation of their machinery. It also advises on applications to install new machinery or to change trade from enterprises already resettled in factory estates.

COTTAGE AND LICENSED AREAS SECTION

120. In cottage areas the division maintains government-owned cottages and departmental quarters, latrines, offices and stores. Its chief commitment, however, is the maintenance of paths, steps surface water drains, nullahs and stream courses, terraces, and hill slopes all of which are liable to damage during typhoons and heavy rainfall. It is responsible for designing and carrying out minor public works to improve the amenities of cottage areas. Among the works executed during the year were the construction of a latrine at Lai Chi Kok, an office at Rennie's Mill Village and a market at Chuk Yuen; the improvement of a stream course at Chai Wan; the erection of guard rails or fencing and the improvements of paths, steps, and hill-slopes in various cottage areas; and the construction of a reinforced concrete bridge at Rennie's Mill Village. 899 government-owned cottages in various cottage areas were repainted during the year. Expenditure on all works (including rainstorm damage repairs) in cottage areas amounted to $1,254,800.

121. A number of voluntary agencies rebuild or convert their own buildings in cottage areas; the division is responsible for examining and approving the original building plans and any subsequent alterations.
