(ii) replacement of old cast-iron plumbing installations with plastic

pipes and vitreous china salt water-resistant equipment;

(iii) provision of additional storage space under staircases for use by

sanitation staff and the Urban Services Department;

(iv) replacement of stopcocks and spring-loaded taps with special

'waste not' taps;

(v) installation of water submains to provide an individual water

supply to factory units;

(vi) provision of permanent refuse collection points for use by the

Urban Services Department;

(vii) repairs to damaged courtyards in factories and estates;

(viii) replacement of damaged asbestos refuse chutes by galvanised iron

chutes in Mark IV blocks;

(ix) re-paving the rampways and landings in factory blocks with

harder wearing surfaces;

(x) installation of horizontal safety guards between the staircases and

rampways in factory blocks, and

(xi) repairs to concrete arising from the corrosion of steel reinforcing

bars, and flaking or cracked concrete.

125. The division prepares plans and estimates and supervises the construction by the maintenance contractor of alterations, minor im- provements and new works within estates for other Government depart- ments. During the year the division approved and supervised 13 works of this nature. Schools and welfare organizations which are allocated accommodation and tenants of shops in estates invariably have to carry out alterations to and decoration of their premises before occupation. The estates section of the Works Division approves and supervises these alterations and also the decoration of domestic rooms.

126. The factory section carried out 121 field inspections of machinery in squatter factories under consideration for resettlement. It advises on floor loading and electrical requirements when factories are resettled, and supervises installation of their machinery. It also advises on applications to install new machinery or to change trade from enter- prises already resettled in factory estates.

Cottage and Licensed Areas Sections

127. In the cottage areas the division only maintains Government- owned cottages and buildings such as departmental quarters, latrines,
