96. Activities in various sports such as football, basket-ball and table-tennis were arranged during the year. Competition was keen and participants enjoyed the games immensely. The annual swimming gala was held on 21st July, 1962, at the Eastern Athletic Association Bathing Pavilion, Lai Chi Kok, Kowloon and was both colourful and successful. Representatives of the department participated in the Inter-departmental Relay Races in the H.K. Life Guard Club and the U.S.D. Swimming Galas held on 19th September, 1962, and 20th September, 1962, res- pectively, taking fifth place in both meetings. Launch picnics to Clear Water Bay and Chi Ma Wan on 15th June and 4th August last year were enjoyed by staff and members of their families. Hiking was also a favourite recreation among the staff. During the year 12 hikes and 2 barbecues were arranged successfully and on each occasion many mem- bers of the staff and their families participated with keen interest.
97. There were three deaths amongst junior staff during the year and the Association contributed a sum of $50.00 towards funeral expenses to the dependants in each case. Other measures of welfare work are under close study by a Sub-Committee of the Association. 98. During the year the department was visited by amongst others: (a) H.R.H.
