tories, which are to be shared between two families, in lieu of the previous communal latrines and bathrooms.

52. The wings of the present Mark 1 and II blocks vary from 140 to 320 feet in length depending on the site. Each wing is normally divided into bays of about twenty-five feet (the full width of the wing) by nine feet six inches. Access is provided by balconies on each floor which run completely round the four sides of each wing.

53. These 240 square feet bays were, in the first buildings, divided by centre line partitions into rooms of 120 square feet. In later blocks the position of this partition varies and it is possible to provide rooms of different sizes for larger and smaller families. The dimensions of the rooms, and their monthly rents, are:

(a) $10 rooms of about 86 square feet for families of 3 to 34 ‘adults'; (b) $14 rooms of about 120 square feet for families of 4 to 5 ‘adults'; (c) $18 rooms of about 152 square feet for families of 5 to 61

'adults';

(d) $28 rooms of about 240 square feet for families of 8 to 10

'adults', or two smaller families wishing to share.

(A child under 10 years is counted as half an adult).

54. On sites where space is limited or where difficulties of site formation preclude the use of a standard 'H' block, a single-wing block, known as an 'I' block, is used. The design and the dimensions are similar to one wing of an 'H' block, the only difference being the inclusion of latrines and bathrooms.

55. Standard resettlement accommodation can be converted at little cost into self-contained flats of either 240 square feet (1 bay), 360 square fect (11⁄2 bays) or 480 square feet (2 bays), each flat having its own kitchen, lavatory, shower and private balcony. Conversions of this kind have in fact been used on the top floors of blocks in some estates. Drawings showing how these conversions can be made may be found at Appendix III at the end of this report. Four 'I' blocks have now been built in different estates, which consist entirely of self-contained flats. Most of these flats have a floor area of 240 square feet for which the rent, including rates, is $45 a month. There are also some flats of 360 square feet with a rent of $65. Better quality accommodation is now also being provided in the end-bay rooms of the Mark II blocks. Each has a kitchen and private balcony, but no lavatory. They are 310 square feet in area and the rent is $45. Self-contained flats are reserved
