into classrooms, while the open spaces in between become school playgrounds. By the end of the year there were twenty nine boys' and girls' clubs and twenty four primary schools on the rooftops of multi- storey buildings and many more applications by voluntary agencies who wished to start schools were being considered. The fees charged by these schools are limited to a maximum of $3 a month. Ground floor rooms are also suitable for case centre work, as is now being done by the Family Welfare Association at Shek Kip Mei, and for medical clinics, two of which have been opened by the Medical Department, one at Tai Hang Tung and one at Li Cheng Uk. Three milk distribution centres, at Shek Kip Mei, Tai Hang Tung and Li Cheng Uk, are being operated by the Church World Service.

104. Large recreation spaces are also provided within the boundaries of each estate, to be laid out by the Urban Services Department in the same way as playgrounds and recreation spaces in other parts of the urban areas. They will include small fenced-off playgrounds for young children, an enclosed area with lawns and benches for the more elderly, and basketball courts and miniature football grounds. By 31st March, 1958, playgrounds of this type had been completed at Tai Hang Tung and Shek Kip Mei Estates.

105. Government has also agreed that areas of Crown land in the vicinity of the resettlement estates should be reserved for schools, wel- fare centres and clinics. By the end of the year under review a large Government polyclinic was completed near Shek Kip Mei and one Government school was nearing completion in Li Cheng Uk. Near Tai Hang Tung one Government school and two private schools were built while the redevelopment of Shek Kip Mei will provide two new sites for schools.

105. Particulars of the schools, welfare centres, and clinics in the cottage areas and in the multi-storey estates will be found at Appendices A and B to this chapter.
