In order to make better use of the available manpower and material the News and Public Affairs Section amalgamated in January 1975. This led to a more efficient use of staff, and the news editor was able to deploy reporters to best effect and to deal more effectively with background to the News. Six main Chinese bulletins and four main English bulletins were produced each day with hourly updated headlines on each service. These locally produced bulletins were augmented by daily bulletins in Cantonese and English broadcast live by satellite from the BBC.
