funds to extend the programmes further. On the drawing board are plans aimed at giving adult listeners more guidance in coping with the problems of living, as well as programmes cover- ing practical science, hotel management, office management, and other appropriate subjects which, it is planned, will be carried out in co-operation with the Caritas Adult Education Centre.
Drama
32.
This section continued to be one of the mainstays of the Chinese Radio Service. Four producers using a pool of fifty actors were responsible for twenty-five broadcast hours of drama a week. It is unnecessary to cover all eleven separate drama series, but one in particular does deserve mention. The series "Blue Collar White Collar" was first broadcast in June 1974 and it revolves round the lives of two typical groups of Hong Kong workers. In modern Hong Kong there is a tendency for industrial work to be considered as inferior employment and too many school leavers aim to be office clerks which is neither socially nor economically desirable. The series attempts to dispel prejudices and to point out the value and importance to society of both industrial and clerical workers. The programme has proved very popular due to the hard work of Ms Agnes Yu, the producer. An indication of its popularity is that the signature tune of the programme is to be commercially recorded.
Public Service Programmes
33.
These are an essential part of the Chinese Radio Service's output. They cater to specialist groups and are among the most popular programmes being transmitted. "For The Disabled" is a weekly half-hour spot devoted to the blind, their problems and how best to solve them. "Fishermen's Half Hour" is produced with the aid of the Agriculture and Fisheries Department, and plays a big role in helping to make the boat people feel part of Hong Kong's community. "Enquire Within", daily five-minute spot produced in conjunction with the Home Affairs Department, answers the listeners' more practical questions, such as how to get a licence for a meat stall, or how to apply for Government housing.
