cartridge recorder/reproducer in Studio S.3. The need for an increase in the public telephone enquiry type of programme brought about the fabrication of a further telephone programme unit.

Operations

73. The re-installation of equipment into Studio C.4a and Control Room C.4b was completed and put into operation as from April. This studio serves three purposes. Firstly, as a conventional continuity studio, secondly as a production studio and thirdly as a self-operated studio whereby disc-jockeys carry out the operations associated with their programmes.

74. There were several instances of faulty recordings due to the supply by the manufacturers of inferior recording tape.

75. Typhoon 'Rose' scored a direct hit on Hong Kong in September. It was the worst typhoon for many years and caused heavy damage to life and property. The whole of Kowloon's electricity supply failed for a considerable time due to a fire in a major sub-station. Broad- casting House emergency generator started immediately but the genera- tor situated at Golden Hill AM Transmitting Station failed to start due to a faulty starting motor and electrical fire. The fault was quickly remedied and the services restored.

76. In September, Hong Kong Commercial Broadcasting Company occupied their new studio centre at Broadcast Drive. This caused some trouble with RHK transmitting station links from Broadcasting House due to mutual interference. The situation was remedied by changes in frequency of the links.

77. Faults were experienced on cross-harbour lines for a period of about half a day in February due to a cable fault. Emergency VHF links were established between Hong Kong and Kowloon to cover required broadcasting services. The outcome of this is that the lines involved are to be split between a number of cables crossing the har- bour and that a microwave link will be established in due course to carry these essential services.

Golden Hill Transmitting Station

78. The performance of the AM Transmitters at Golden Hill carry- ing the Chinese and English Services was satisfactory and the off-air time totalled only 1 hour 43 minutes, due to a power failure.
