68. There was an increase in the 'pop' type of programme during the year under review. This entailed the installation in Continuity Studios of additional equipment to enable the disc-jockeys to carry out their own programme control.

69. VU Meters were installed in both AM Continuity Control Rooms in order to introduce more compression of the dynamic range of the AM Services, thereby increasing their range. Additional compres- sion was introduced at the Golden Hill Transmitters by adjustment to line sending amplifiers and limiters.

70. With the introduction of more 'pop' programmes and associated jingles, the need for the use of cartridge tape-recorders was foreseen and tests carried out on certain units preparatory to their recommenda- tion for use.

71. Work was commenced on a programme for the siting of gap- fillers or translators for the FM Services in order to obtain 100% coverage throughout the Colony. Initially, a temporary translator station was installed on Mount Davis in order to evaluate coverage of the north-western, western and south-western areas of Hong Kong Island, These areas are badly affected by multipath distortion. Test results proved very satisfactory.

72. To cover film sound dubbing an Ampex recorder/reproducer Type AG440 was modified for use with pilot-tone signals.

PROGRAMME OPERATIONS

73. There was a very considerable increase in the number of Chinese dramatized programmes which reached a peak of 51 productions per week.

74. A programme department Induction Course was carried out and lectures were given by engineering staff.

75. Radio microphones were introduced and have been found to be particularly useful in the broadcast of Chinese Opera programmes. With this type of programme the leading artists can conceal the micro- phone in their costumes enabling them to move freely about the stage.

76. The important outside broadcast event of the year was the visit of His Holiness the Pope on 4th December. Coverage included two
