took place in June and they were organized on a quarterly basis there- after. Members included the Deputy Colonial Secretary, the Commis- sioner of Police, departmental spokesmen from the Public Works Department and the Housing Authority and many others.

78. In the course assessment sessions members expressed enthusiastic support for these training exercises which are now a feature of the department's activities. It is intended to expand the range of subjects to include television training once facilities become available.

79. The intake of new staff to the department has, over the years, been on an irregular pattern and it has not been possible to organize a formal staff training programme. However, in 1970 a considerable number of new officers will be taken on at the same time, and a com- prehensive training course, both in broadcasting techniques and general Government procedures, is now being worked out in order to prepare them to take their place effectively in the department.

CONCLUSION

80. The transfer of broadcasting operations from Mercury House to Broadcasting House and Sutherland House imposed particular strains on all members of the staff, in particular those of Cable & Wireless and I would like to record my thanks to them for the smoothness with which the transition was carried out. I must also record, on behalf of all staff and artists, our regret that the year also saw the death on the 17th March of one of Hong Kong's best known broadcasters, Miss Aileen WOODS, M.B.E. at the age of 83.

D. E. BROOKS, Director of Broadcasting.
