interest it must be personally relevant to the audience; subjects such as education and housing are certainly of interest, whereas programmes on drug addiction and government activities not having direct personal relevance to the listener do not command much attention.

65. Radio theatre, Cantonese music, western 'pop' music and sport are the most important entertainment elements in radio.

66. The implications of this important piece of Audience Research are now being investigated and appropriate programme alterations made to meet the wishes of the listeners whenever possible. It is hoped that a similar exercise can be carried out amongst listeners to the English Service in 1969-70.

LIBRARY

67. Approximately a third of Radio Hong Kong's airtime is taken up by gramophone record programmes. The Record Library containing both record and tape thus plays a very important part in the department and its efficiency directly affects the quality of the programmes put out by both services. Over the years the Library has grown considerably and now contains a total of over 60,000 discs and some 8,000 tapes.

68. In May 1968, a Programme Officer (Librarian) was recruited, and after a short introductory period in Hong Kong, visited Radio Malaysia and Radio Singapore to broaden his experience and to find out how other record libraries of a similar size are organized. The department is very grateful to these organizations for their willing assistance.

69. As a result of his investigations and based upon a report sub- mitted on his return, various changes in the Library procedure are being introduced. The highlight of the year as far as the Library is concerned was, of course, its removal to Broadcasting House. The whole process took about a month. The library staff responded very well to the problems involved and the removal was completed in early March 1969.

70. Plans are now in hand to reorganize the staff structure of this important section of the department to enable the Librarian to ration- alize the various processes involved in the handling of commercial records, overseas transcription, RHK tape recordings and reference library books.
