by arranging visits to factories and other institutions and allowing them to record their own interviews and impressions. Children are also en- couraged to take part in regular weekly discussions, quizzes and drama programmes. Musical recitals featuring children were also arranged on a weekly basis.

51. The Chinese service broadcast three programmes which set out to teach listeners the English language. These were 'CALLING ALL BEGINNERS', 'KEEP UP YOUR ENGLISH' and 'ENGLISH WITH A PURPOSE'. The programmes are all BBC originations.

MUSIC

52. Like most other broadcasting stations throughout the world, Radio Hong Kong devotes a proportion of its air time to music, which can be roughly classified under two broad headings: Light or Serious.

SERIOUS MUSIC

53. Although much of the music broadcast is taken from either commercial recordings or transcriptions from overseas no effort is spared in arranging studio recitals, promoting and broadcasting local perform- ances and relaying performances by visiting artists of note who appear in Hong Kong.

54. From the English Service point of view there was a pause in such visits during the disturbances of 1967 but despite this many world renowned musicians and orchestras broadcast over Radio Hong Kong during the period covered by this report. These included: The Julliard String Quartet; the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra; Gerard SOUZAY (cellist): the Vienna Philharmonic Quartet; The Vienna Academy Chorus; Andre TCHAIKOVSKY (pianist); Abbey SIMON (pianist); Stefania Woy- TOWICZ; Michael HEAD (composer/singer); Paul OLEFASKY (cellist); Barry TUCKWELL (French Horn); Michel DEBOST (flute); Sylvia BIDDLE (soprano); Yu Chun-yee (pianist) and Omar ATREO (guitar).

OPERA AND FM SERVICE

55. The English service continued to broadcast a full opera on FM each Wednesday and laid plans to proside an all music service on FM from 9.15 p.m. until midnight each weekday evening.

56. The Radio Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra was formed in 1965. This 12 piece ensemble is led by Mr. Lo Ka-chi, a musician and composer of high standing. The orchestra is retained on a contract basis on fixed salaries.
