97. The use of portable recorders also continued at a high level and it was necessary during the year to issue a separate machine to each of the daily news magazine producers for their retention. This eased the pressure on the pool of remaining machines. Nevertheless these were booked out on an average of 180 sessions each month. The total number of occasions on which portable recorders were used averaged 340 per month, representing a 70% increase over last year's figure.

98. The Assistant Director, Mr. I. D. KINGSLEY, spent part of his vacation leave in Britain studying television service production and organization. Mr. E. A. FISHER, Senior Executive Officer, Class II, who had been serving as Secretary, went on overseas vacation leave on 26th February, 1964, and was replaced by Mr. S. G. DARK, Senior Executive Officer, Class I.

99. Messrs. Ralph PIXTON and John G. DEARLOVE were appointed as Announcers, English Service, in April 1963. Two announcers, English Service, Mrs. P. L. TIDBURY and Mrs. C. M. H. DUNKERLEY, resigned in July and September, 1963, respectively and one post was filled by Mr. J. HALKET in December, 1963. Mr. Aaron Lo Sai-ping was appointed Producer, Class II in August, 1963. Mrs. I. Y. BROOKS, Producer Class I, resigned in November, 1963, and her post was filled by Mr. C. B. SIMPSON, Producer Class I in the same month. Mr. Hugh CHEN, Producer Class I, returned to the B.B.C. in February, 1964, and Mr. Poon Chan-sin returned to Hong Kong in the same month at the completion of his secondment to that organization.

100. On the 31st March, 1964, the staff numbered eighty-six, thirty- nine being members of the programme sections and the remainder being engaged in executive, clerical and miscellaneous duties. The technical staff of Cable and Wireless Ltd. employed on broadcasting operations
