MAGAZINE PROGRAMMES
36. The most important magazine programme in the Chinese Service is undoubtedly 'Topical Events' which is broadcast on week-days. This contains interviews and background material on many aspects of life in Hong Kong. During the year the programme was extended by five minutes and is now broadcast from 7.30-7.50 p.m. each evening; there is also a round-up of the more interesting items of the week which is heard on Saturday evenings.
37. 'Motoring Magazine' and 'Fishermen's Half-Hour' continued to cater for the respective needs of their audiences. 'Photographic Magazine' considerably increased its appeal during the year and in August a monthly photographic competition was introduced. The response was so great and of such a standard that consideration is now being given to the possibility of issuing a booklet in which would be reprinted some of the winning entries together with feature articles of interest to amateur photographers.
38. 'The Little Garden' is a programme for children. It includes quizzes, competitions, stories and short playlets acted by the young people themselves. A special party was given on Christmas Day to which 100 children were invited and the games and singing were recorded for subsequent broadcast.
SPORT AND OUTSIDE BROADCASTS
39. As can be seen elsewhere in this report the number of outside broadcasts continued to increase during the past year. Many of these concern sporting activities; football is still the most popular of sports but there are also frequent commentaries on basket-ball, swimming, table-tennis, volley-ball and boxing. These broadcasts are supported by such regular programmes as 'Sports Forecast', 'Sports Round-Up' and, in season, full details of race-results are also given.
40. In his budget speech of 1962 the Hon. Financial Secretary announced the introduction of Hong Kong Government Lotteries. Two were held in 1962 and three in the year under review. The results of the Government lotteries are always broadcast 'live' from the City Hall Concert Hall when the draws take place.
41. The list of typical outside broadcasts of the year includes 'The Queen's Birthday Parade', 'The Opening Ceremony of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital', The ‘Annual Review of the Police', 'The St. John's Ambulance
