15. Whilst there is no shortage of local talent the task of maintaining the programmes at as high a standard as possible for 17 hours each day throughout the year is considerable. Fortunately, there is a growing number of Chinese broadcasters who are able to devote themselves to this work on a full-time professional basis. This is particularly true in the field of radio drama which continues to appeal to audiences of all ages.
STAFF
16. The staff of the Chinese Service consists of a Head of Programmes, 12 producers, 4 Cantonese announcers and 3 Kuoyu announcers. The duties of the staff producers are allocated as follows:
Chinese classical music and literature programmes.
Magazine and documentaries.
Variety and quiz programmes.
Presentation, talks and story-telling.
'Topical Events' and sporting broadcasts.
Film features and documentaries.
Drama and outside broadcasts.
Serial drama production.
Light music and science features.
Talks and educational broadcasts.
Women and children's programmes.
However, due to secondment to the B.B.C., the service was short of one producer during the year.
EDUCATIONAL BROADCASTS
17. It is generally recognized that interest in education in Hong Kong is considerable and the search for knowlege is vigourously pursued. English as a language qualification is regarded as being particularly important.
18. With this in mind, therefore, the Chinese Service programmes were re-organized during the year so that two periods were set aside on weekdays for programmes of an educational nature. Within these periods, one in the morning of 14 hours and the other in the late afternoon of 11⁄2 hours, were broadcast two Radio Hong Kong projects ‘English for Junior Forms' and 'Chinese Educational Broadcasts'. These programmes were produced in conjunction with work books which were printed by the Government Printer. The response was very gratifying. During the period in which these series were broadcast some 20,000 booklets were purchased by students. This would seem to confirm that there is a need
