16. Special radio plays were also commissioned and broadcast to bring home to listeners certain social dangers. Examples of this type of programme were 'Kill the Fly', of which the title is self-explanatory, and other works dealing with 'anti-litter' and 'anti-tuberculosis' cam- paigns, the drive against narcotics and the dangers of poliomyelitis.

CHINESE OPERA

17. The new City Hall of Hong Kong, opened in March 1962, has proved to be a considerable stimulus to the presentation of local opera. The fine new facilities available in the Concert Hall of the City Hall have encouraged both opera groups and the public to perpetuate this time-honoured art. Whenever possible Radio Hong Kong broadcasts performances from the City Hall and other opera theatres so that the public who are unable to be present in person can hear some of the best that Hong Kong has to offer in this field.

MUSICAL PROGRAMMES

18. In addition to the ever popular and regular productions of Chinese music from Radio Hong Kong ("Singing Platform', 'Voice and String Harmonies', 'Nam Yum', etc.) this year also saw the introduction of a new venture in which traditional music of various districts of China was performed by noted local musicians in the Colony. Included in this series were 'Chiu Chow Music', 'Tunes from Amoy', 'Kwangtung Popular Tunes' as well as other representative programmes of folk music.

19. On the lighter side 'Hot Numbers' portrayed some of the best of western dance music with the accent on the Latin American com- positions, whilst 'Music for Dining' was a more relaxed and sophisticated presentation.

20. Record request programmes continued to be well patronized, particularly by the younger listeners. A estimated 250,000 letters for all types of programmes were received during the year, coming from Indonesia and Malaya as well as Hong Kong and Macau. It is likely that distant overseas listeners wrote to request music for relatives and friends in Hong Kong rather than as a result of listening to the pro- gramme themselves.

FEATURE AND DOCUMENTARY PROGRAMMES

21. 'We Live Below Victoria Peak', a weekly documentary pro- gramme about the life and customs of various groups of people, was
