74. Five concerts were broadcast, the first and last on both F.M. and A.M. transmissions and the remainder on the F.M. service only. By common report, the combination of fine orchestral playing and the excellent acoustics of the new City Hall produced a series of musical broadcasts without parallel in the Colony's history.

75. In addition to the public concerts, leading musicians from the London Philharmonic Orchestra also gave solo and chamber music recitals from Radio Hong Kong's own Concert Hall, which were well received.

76. The conductor of the Orchestra, Sir Malcolm SARGENT, and many of its members, also came to the microphone to discuss their work and to give an insight into the lives of professional musicians.

77. Other outstanding broadcasts during the year were recitals by André TCHAIKOWSKY, The Vienna Boys' Choir, Mindru KATZ, and The Stross Quartet. There were also two most informative series of illustrated talks by Henry COWELL and Joseph BLOCH, both American musicians. There was a considerable number of broadcasts this year by local musicians in weekly recitals 'From the Concert Hall', and that given by the child prodigy, David OEI, was particularly noteworthy. Music lovers were also offered illustrated talks and magazine programmes by the Rev. Father T. S. RYAN, S.J. and Clive SIMPSON, both well-known in music circles of the Colony.

78. An innovation in the field of gramophone record programmes was 'Square Island', in which well-known local residents were asked to talk about the serious music they would take with them to that now famous but ever uncharted 'Desert Island'.

79. Each Wednesday evening the A.M. and F.M. transmissions diverged to make possible the broadcast in entirety of full length opera works, at the same time maintaining a varied programme service for the ordinary listener on the Medium Wave transmission. Notable broadcasts included a number of new releases of opera and oratorios, including WAGNER'S 'Tristan and Isolde', BELLINI's 'Norma', Richard STRAUSS' 'Elektra', MOZART'S 'Magic Flute', 'L'Enfance du Christ' of BERLIOZ and 'The Seasons' by HAYDN.

80. Radio Hong Kong has always deemed it a responsibility to encourage the Colony's own talent by presenting local musicians in live. recitals. The procedure for recruiting contributors to 'From the Concert Hall' is for musicians who feel that they have acquired sufficient
