18. A local production was 'Behind the Headlines' in which foreign correspondents, professionally based in Hong Kong, were invited to offer impromptu discussion and comment on the week's news.
19. Radio Hong Kong gave good coverage to the American Presi- dential Election. As the results became known and excitement increased in the United States the scene was brought to listeners by means of relays from American networks. These were obtained through the good offices of the Voice of America and the local office of the United States Information Service.
Light Music
20. The producer in charge of Light Music broadcasts from Radio Hong Kong was, for many a year, Miss Aileen WOODS, M.B.E. Her retirement this year, coinciding as it did with the first year of all day broadcasting, presented a serious problem. Radio Hong Kong was fortunate, however, in being able to recruit in her place a pro- ducer whose knowledge of the world of popular music is similarly comprehensive.
21. Recorded music presentations broadcast by Radio Hong Kong were, again, greatly assisted by a large group of free lance contributors who compiled and presented records of their choice. Programmes in this category included 'Home till Ten', 'Continental Cabaret', ‘Jazz Half Hour', 'Mark after Dark', 'Do you Remember?', 'Music at Mid-level', etc. Two productions by members of the staff are worthy of note: 'Four Corners', a programme which investigated the history and style of folk songs in many countries of the world, and 'Hong Kong Hit Parade'. Both productions were very well received.
Variety
22. This is a category of programme in which really talented local artists are rare. In consequence, the Department has had to rely on programmes produced in more fruitful centres. From the B.B.C. Trans- cription Service we have broadcast 'The Goons', 'Hancock's Half Hour', "Take it from Here', 'Life with the Lyons', 'Beyond our Ken' and many other series of a humourous nature. There were, however, several other series which were compiled locally from gramophone records. Note- worthy was 'People are Funny' which brought to listeners examples of the modern trend of American humour as exemplified by Mort SAHL and Bob Newhart.
