Soft Voices Die', 'Words, Words, Words', and 'People Talking', all of which revealed a considerable demand for programmes concerned with the spoken word. 'The European Complex' was another important BBC series which included among its speakers Peter USTINOV, Bertrand RUSSELL and Vernon BARTLETT.
109. Anthologies and magazine programmes also proved popular and included a Festival preview programme, a new film magazine called 'Film Focus', and 'A Breath of Air' an anthology in verse and music; while Stephen ALEXANDER'S 'Mainly for Middlebrows' quickly established a strong following with its pungent and controversial views on life in the Colony.
110. The visiting writer, E. Arnot ROBERTSON, member of the 'My Word' panel, also gave a couple of talks in which she described, amongst other things, some of the things she had eaten for England; while John JENKINS of the British Council broadcast a series of four programmes about opera.
111. The National Days of the minority communities in Hong Kong were marked with special talks and programmes, and appeals on behalf of most of the charitable organizations were broadcast each Friday night.
112. A new scientific magazine 'Exploration' gave information on scientific matters for the layman. 'Motoring Magazine' continued to cater for a small but fanatical group of enthusiasts and was honoured with an exclusive interview with the doyen himself, Stirling Moss.
113. Political controversy in Britain and the world was reflected each week in 'London Calling', a weekly discussion programme select- ed from the General Overseas Service of the BBC.
114. Other communities in the Colony such as the French and Portuguese were catered for with a regular 'French Half Hour' and 'Portuguese Half Hour', and the attention of listeners was directed towards various foreign lands with the opening of a 'Holiday Magazine' which answered listeners' questions and brought people with special knowledge of various countries to the microphone. Broadcasting for children was expanded during the year to provide a daily programme for the younger age group and plans were begun to expand this at a later stage to a full half hour which would include slightly older children.
