were also broadcast included international soccer against Peru and Costa Rica, the FARELF Boxing Championships, the Hong Kong Bisley, a Sailing Interport, and the Malayan Cricket Interport. All the great events in the United Kingdom from the world of racing, rowing, soccer, cricket and rugby union were also relayed from the General Overseas Service of the BBC. Sporting enthusiasts were also catered for in the weekly magazine 'Sportscast which in addition to providing sports news brought to the microphone such leading personalities as Hashim KHAN, Joe di MAGGIO, Peter THOMPSON and Stirling Moss.
Outside Broadcasts
93. Apart from sports events outside broadcasts also covered the Colony's principal ceremonies such as the Queen's Birthday Parade and the Remembrance Day Service, while many local activities such as the opening of the exhibition of Hong Kong products, the Agricul- tural Show, the City Hall foundation stone laying and the opening of the Festival of the Arts were brought to the listener as they happened.
94. Listeners are not often able to eavesdrop on a broadcast rehearsal, but this took place during the rehearsal for the New Year's Eve Roundup programme in which listeners joined in celebrations at many different places in the Colony. For rehearsal purposes this trial run was actually broadcast but on a different frequency from the usual. When it was discovered that many listeners had heard this rehearsal and found it amusing it was decided to broadcast an edited version followed by a recording of the finished product. The result which was called 'The Birth of a Broadcast appeared to be most popular and it is believed to be the first broadcast of its kind done anywhere in the world.
News Coverage
95. News broadcast from the BBC continued to include twice daily bulletins from the General Overseas Service and a nightly Radio Newsreel, whilst locally prepared, bulletins from the Information Services Department were also broadcast twice daily.
96. With Hong Kong becoming more widely known an even greater number of visiting personalities came to the microphone, most of these appearing in the weekly news magazine 'This Week' (See Appendix G).
97. Among the outstanding local events which were given news coverage during the year was the combined service military exercise 'Whizzbang', the opening of the 100th Resettlement Block at Wong
