47. That fishermen as well as farmers should be happy was recog- nized late in the year and, at the end of November, the first of an experimental series of six variety shows for fishermen was produced at the main fishing centres.

News

48. News bulletins were rearranged after the reorganization of the language pattern of the Service. Four Cantonese bulletins are broad- cast daily, one from the BBC, four Kuoyu bulletins with one from the BBC, two Chiuchow bulletins and one Hakka bulletin. Local bulletins of world and Hong Kong news are compiled by the Information Services Department.

49. 'Topical Events' is a weekly half hour news actuality magazine; at the beginning of the year the programme lasted for only fifteen minutes, but this was insufficient to cope with the growing volume of available material and in November the programme was expanded.

50. The daily BBC Chinese news bulletins are relayed direct from London, and both Cantonese and Kuoyu bulletins include commentaries on the news. The BBC Kuoyu programme is recorded and rebroadcast the following morning.

Rural Broadcasting

51. Mention has already been made of the variety shows for farmers and fishermen. The mainstay of rural broadcasting is the weekly 'Farmers' Magazine' which was completely reorganized during the year in order to make possible long range planning, particularly of that section of the programme which deals with current farming topics. There are four parts to the programme, a weekly roundup of activities concerning farmers and events in the New Territories, the discussion dealing with a single farming topic, a letter box in which farmers' questions are answered and a market report. Whilst the majority of villages visited by the team of Radio Hong Kong and Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Department staff who produce the programme were in the more easily accessible parts of the country, efforts were made to visit the more remote villages, including those on the islands of Lantau and Ping Chau.

52. Ás the year was ending, both the Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Department and the New Territories Administration were making increased use of the programme as a means of disseminating official news and announcements of importance to country people.
