98. The studio centre is in Mercury House, the Far East head- quarters of Cable and Wireless Ltd., who are responsible for the department's technical operation. There are nine studios, including separate continuity and production suites for the Chinese and English Programme Services, three recording rooms and a central control room, from which programmes are fed by landline to the transmitters at Hung Hom. An echo chamber is located in another building. During the year two news studios were under construction in the new Govern- ment Offices, West Wing.

99. The most important technical development during the year was the successful conclusion of a series of tests designed to show whether VHF/FM transmissions could be used to improve reception in outlying areas of the Colony and to solve the problem of growing interference with medium wave services in the urban areas. Cable and Wireless Ltd. carried out the tests, and on the basis of their recommendations the Government approved a scheme for the building of a new transmitting station at Mount Gough on Hong Kong Island and the installation of 5-Kw. VHF/FM transmitters for both English and Chinese Programme Services. Hong Kong will thus become one of the few countries in the Far East to operate this new high quality broadcast transmission system.

100. The Mount Gough station, using Marconi equipment, will be unmanned, the transmitters being operated automatically and checked
