67. Mr. T. D. Brinton, seconded from the BBC as Senior Programme Assistant, returned to the Corporation in February, and his place was taken by Mr. T. A. Birch, Programme Assistant Class 1, who had attended a BBC Training Course in 1958 and had subsequently been attached to the Central Programme Operations, Features and Drama and Music Departments of the BBC.

30TH ANNIVERSARY PROGRAMMES

68. The English Service commemorated the anniversary with a documentary programme 'Voices Through the Years' and a musical feature in which many of the artists who have pioneered music in the Colony and regularly broadcast in the process, took part.

69. 'Voices Through the Years' was an ambitious attempt to present a continuous sound picture of Radio Hong Kong's life since 1928; pre- war records are scanty but personal reminiscences brought them to life and amplified them. One of the most moving contributions came from the Reverend Ernest Sandbach, who has been associated with religious broadcasting in Hong Kong for many years, and who spoke of the part radio played in the life of internees at Stanley during the war. Broad- casters who had worked for Radio Hong Kong in past years sent recorded contributions from all over the world and the broadcasting organizations of Commonwealth countries, including Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Pakistan and South Africa, together with the BBC, sent special recorded contributions to the programme. 'Voices Through the Years', whatever feelings it may have engendered in listeners, will be remembered by those who produced it mainly for the excessively dramatic way it took the air; the final tape recordings were still being edited whilst the earlier ones were being broadcast. The scriptwriter (of partly Irish descent) was heard to remark 'it's just as well that thirty year anniversaries only come every thirty years'. Thirty years of sport in Hong Kong were recalled in another anniversary programme.
